How much data will you lose if your current hard drive fails today? Do you have everything stored on an external drive or on a cloud service so you can restore it?

Clean that dust
Computers that has dust trapped in them traps heat which is not good for the overall lifespan and general performance of your computer. If you could clean it once every year that would be perfect.
Clean it by opening it up and blowing the dust out with compressed air. The exterior can be wiped down with a damp cloth. Don’t use household cleaners. The best is to get products specifically indicated to do the job.
Run your antivirus and spyware scans often
A no-brainer really but this needs to be listed here.
If your computer is connected to the internet it needs to have antivirus software installed.
Try to run a full scan of your computer regularly and at least once a month.

Clean up old software.
Go to the ‘Add or Remove Programs’ interface on your computer. Remove any software you don’t use anymore. Just be sure that the software you remove has nothing to do with hardware that is needed to run your computer.

Clean up your OS
Windows is not the most efficient operating system, and sometimes needs attention itself.
Be sure to clean your ‘temporary files’ that holds a large amount of unnecessary information that takes up space.
Run regular updates
Check for updates for your hardware and software.
This includes Windows Updates, checking for updated drivers, and checking for software patches.
Keep it tidy
That mess of cables behind your desk and computer is a good place to start. tie them together. Eliminate snags and unnecessary stresses on computer ports.
Cleaning the dust will also help that it does not collect in your machine and cause it to overheat.
