Clean that dust

Computers that has dust trapped in them traps heat which is not good for the overall lifespan and general performance of your computer. If you could clean it once every year that would be perfect.

Clean it by opening it up and blowing the dust out with compressed air. The exterior can be wiped down with a damp cloth. Don’t use household cleaners. The best is to get products specifically indicated to do the job.

Run your antivirus and spyware scans often

A no-brainer really but this needs to be listed here.

If your computer is connected to the internet it needs to have antivirus software installed.

Try to run a full scan of your computer regularly and at least once a month.

For an extra layer of security, AdAware and SpyBot are two of the best known (and free!) products available.

Read this post to learn about the different types of malware, viruses, spyware etc.

Clean up old software.

Go to the ‘Add or Remove Programs’ interface on your computer. Remove any software you don’t use anymore. Just be sure that the software you remove has nothing to do with hardware that is needed to run your computer.

Go to Steffen Gerlach’s website that will give you a representation of the data stored on your hard drive.
